Compact: The P&J will no longer be in broadsheet style.

It is the end of an era for Scotland's largest regional newspaper as it publishes its final broadsheet edition.

Since Saturday the Aberdeen-based Press and Journal will print a new compact-style newspaper six days a week.

The newspaper's origins date back to the 18th century, but editor Damian Bates says the time is right to move away from the traditional format.

A compact edition has been printed on a Saturday for several years and the Monday edition recently moved the same way.

Mr Bates said: "This move towards a compact newspaper has been driven very much by our readers.

"We do undertake a great deal of market research, which has suggested that the vast majority of people want to see a compact newspaper.

"It's easier to handle and we're determined to give the readers what they want."
