I cannot believe Sir Walter Scott is not included in the shortlist. We would have no national identity without the Waverley Novels.

That said, it must be Burns

I cannot believe that despite Midge Ure being on the list he wasn't put forward. As much as I am a fan of Annie Lennox, I'm sure that she herself would admit that Midge is a much more worthy candidate! They make mention of her achieving beyond the field of music, well the same could be said of Midge:

    Ivor Novello and Grammy winner

Co-writer and producer of the World's ever biggest selling single (Do they Know it's Christmas?)raising £8M saving countless lives

Trustee of the Band Aid Trust

Musical director for the Princes Trust

Co-organiser of Live 8 at Murrayfield for the G8 summit

    Patron for the Burnsong project

    Founder of Tunited

He was awarded an OBE for his services to Music and Charity (20 years after Bob Geldof received his knighthood)

The list goes on and that's even before you mention his success as a songwriter and world record for having the most number ones under different band names (Slik, Visage, Band Aid, Midge Ure etc etc) and that's before you even mention co-writing the TOTP theme tune!!!!

I really think that the "panel" should have had a wee look on Wikipedia or better still the biography section of midgeure.com before dismissing him. I think they've made a terrible mistake. As for Annie Lennox being put through because you still see her late at night on BBC3... what the hell? Ultravox reformed this year and sold out EVERY gig of the tour! Midge has been on the tv countless times this year, not only in his capacity as lead singer of Ultravox (they also played the Isle of Wight festival which was televised) but also because he just recently returned to Africa for Save the Children..... for goodness sake people, do your research!!!!

I would hope, no EXPECT that he is on the list next year, as his ommission is a disgrace!!!
