Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band placed first at the 2011 Cowal Highland Gathering, completing a clean sweep of the five major championships this season to achieve the coveted 'grand slam' for the second time in the band's history.
The full grade one pipe band results were as follows:
1st - Field Marshal Montgomery
2nd - Inveraray and District
3rd - Boghall and Bathgate
4th - St Laurence O'Toole
5th - Strathclyde Police
6th - Scottish Power
7th - The House of Edgar Shotts and Dykehead
8th - Fife Constabulary
9th - Cullybackey
10th - Lothian and Borders Police
11th - Torphichen and Bathgate
12th - Dysart and Dundonald
13th - Robert Wiseman Dairies Vale of Atholl
The winning band was presented their award by Taggart Star Blythe Duff, the chieftain of this year's gathering.
Over 150 pipe bands competed in today's event, from novice juveniles through to grade one champions. The event also played host to the World Highland Dancing Competition plus various heavy athletic events.
Adding a historic element to Field Marshal Montgomery's achievement today is the fact that this is the first time in history that a single pipe band has won the 'grand slam' more than once.
Pipe Major Parkes explained. “We won all five major championships and I believe we made history today being the first band to do that twice.”
“Unbelievable for us, a dream come true again.”
