Simon Fraser University won the World Pipe Band Championships Grade 1 category in comprehensive style, Pipe Sergeant Jack Lee admitting that it’s felt like “all the hard work has paid off”.

It’s the second year in a row that the Canadian band has taken the top award at the World Pipe Band Championships, which was held yesterday at Glasgow Green and attracted an estimated 45,000 spectators.

Jack said: “It feels fantastic, every time we’ve won it’s felt the same. It’s a great feeling, this is the top prize in the piping world, and it’s a multinational event but to come out top in such an incredibly difficult field is a fabulous feeling.

“It makes you feel like all the hard work has paid off.”

Simon Fraser took the trophy with a commanding performance, winning both the MSR (march, strathspey and reel) and medley categories for a comprehensive victory in the overall result, also coming out top overall for their drum section, all of which was no mean feat given the high standard of this year’s field.

When asked how if it felt like it went well when they played, Jack replied: “It did, it honestly did, I’m not just saying that, we felt great while we were playing it. The tone was good and the drumming was hot, so we really felt good while we were playing.”

So how will they celebrate? “I have no idea, but we’ll find a way, I guarantee it,” Jack said. “Canadians do know how to celebrate!”
