This week: Snow at CairnGorm Pic: CairnGorm Ski Centre
Scotland’s ski centres are celebrating one of the best seasons in recent years and, despite record warmth recently, snow-lovers have a few more weeks of fun in store. For the first time in 18 years, ski-ing may continue into June.
This winter – the coldest for 47 years – brought fantastic news for the ski centres at Nevis, Glencoe, Glenshee, CairnGorm and The Lecht.
And even last weekend bringing the warmest May ever, hasn’t spoiled the fun.
STV’s weather expert Sean Batty said: “With the warmer weather during the weekend, a good thaw set in of the snow patches but by Monday the temperatures dropped significantly from the north bringing summit temperatures back closer to freezing and therefore halting the thaw.
“In actual fact it's been cold enough for snow showers which have peppered the mountain during Tuesday and Wednesday giving some fresh accumulations.
”Rain will move across the country during Thursday and this will fall as snow above around 2,000ft meaning more snow to come for the slopes.
”On Friday and Saturday it's back to showers and I would put estimates of up to 10cms of fresh on the upper levels by the weekend.”

Ski-zi does it all year
CairnGorm operations manager Colin Matthew said: “We’ll be open Saturday to Monday this weekend and may even stay open through the week and on some weekends in June, if there is a big enough demand and weather permits. The last time we were still able to ski into June was back in 1993.”
The CairnGorm first opened for this season back on the November 28. Since then they’ve managed 140 ski-ing days out of a possible 180.
