Burns Supper: Poosie Nancy’s Tavern

We join a traditional Burns Supper at Poosie Nancy’s Tavern in Mauchline to see how the festivities unfold. Mauchline is regarded by locals as the centre of Burns country.

Proceedings start with the welcoming of a guest, or gangrel buddy, who has just dropped in. In this instance the gangrel buddy is Dean Cummings from Ohio, USA.

After the Selkirk Grace, broth is served, followed by haggis, one of the staple foods during Burns’ time, along with neeps and tatties.
Andy Cooper recites the Address to a Haggis, the last verse of which was written in Mauchline after Burns had been invited to lunch after church by one of his friends. The earlier part of the poem was written in Edinburgh.

The haggis is sliced open and toasted with a dram before being served. Tommy Scott and Bob Baillie then sing the Burns song Killiecrankie.
