Dame Kelly Holmes: The gold medallist launched the Youth Games bid in Glasgow.

Double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes helped to launch Glasgow’s bid to host the Youth Olympic Games in 2018.

Following on the back of the city being named host of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, backers formally launched the bid on Tuesday.

Dame Kelly took part in the event at Kelvingrove Art Gallery where the campaign to get a “tangible legacy” to the Commonwealth Games was held.

The Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council and the British Olympic Association are among those behind the project entitled ‘Be a Champion in Your Life’.

Dame Kelly said: "Any athlete who’s ever competed in Glasgow will tell you – this is a very special sports city. A Youth Olympics here would be an incredible way to kick-start the careers of the next generation of young athletes.

"They’ve got world-class facilities, a great history of hosting top sports events, and some of the most passionate fans on the planet. Glasgow 2018 is in a great position to make a real contribution to the future of the Olympic movement."

Scottish Sports Minister Shona Robison and city council leader Gordon Matheson were among others who welcomed the news of the Youth Olympics bid.
